This family group on the beach in their formal clothes have faded and been
written over. There are cracks and tears and the fading obliterates the
detail.

This working class mining family group is sitting in their best formal clothes on a beach and has been written on to identify the people, has the word 'MINERALS' printed on it and become faded, torn and spotted with age.
Restoration involved carefully repairing the torn corners, restoring and improving the contrast from the faded colour to the original black and white and removing the writing and print. The improved contrast returns the texture of the clothes to their original appearance and clearer faces makes family likenesses with living family descendants much more obvious.
Well worth doing!

The family group has been restored by adjusting the contrast and brightness, removing the spots, cracks and tears and carefully replacing the background where the writing and printing have defaced it.
This detail shows a section with writing and printing over the image. There is considerable spotting with some cracks and tears in the image.
The restored part of the photograph of a young boy and his grandmother on the beach in their Sunday best clothes as was the norm in working class holiday pictures.
